About Sonmarg

Sonmarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold", is one of the most spectacular mountain destinations in Kashmir. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks, alpine landscapes and the Sindh River, Sonmarg is a favourite destination for nature lovers and adventure travellers.

Sonmarg is also strategically important for travellers heading towards Ladakh. The road continues east from Sonmarg towards Zoji La, the mountain pass that leads from Kashmir towards the Ladakh region.

The journey from Srinagar to Sonmarg is ideal for a self-drive road trip because the route itself offers beautiful mountain scenery, rivers and changing landscapes.

🏔️ Thajiwas Glacier

Thajiwas Glacier is one of Sonmarg's best-known attractions. The glacier is surrounded by alpine meadows, snow-covered mountains and beautiful mountain scenery.

Depending on the season and local conditions, visitors can enjoy the surrounding landscape through local excursions and walks.

🏔️ Zoji La

Zoji La is the famous high mountain pass east of Sonmarg. It forms an important link between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region.

If you are planning to continue towards Ladakh, Sonmarg is one of the major points on the journey before the route climbs towards Zoji La.

🌲 Sindh River & Mountain Valleys

Day 1 — Srinagar → Sonmarg

Recommended departure: 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM

🚗 Start from Srinagar

Start your journey from Srinagar in the morning. The road gradually changes from the urban surroundings of Srinagar to greener valleys and mountain landscapes.

📍 Suggested Route

Srinagar → Ganderbal → Kangan → Gund → Sonmarg

📍 Stop 1 — Ganderbal

Continue through the Ganderbal area and enjoy the changing landscape as you move towards the mountains.

📍 Stop 2 — Kangan

Kangan is one of the settlements along the route. You can use this area for a short refreshment or fuel stop if required.

📍 Stop 3 — Scenic Mountain Route

Continue towards Sonmarg while enjoying the Sindh River, mountain views and surrounding forests.

🏔️ Arrival in Sonmarg

Reach Sonmarg around late morning or early afternoon. Check into your accommodation or begin sightseeing depending on your schedule.

🌆 Arrival in Srinagar

You can normally reach Srinagar in the afternoon or evening depending on your sightseeing, traffic and road conditions.

Gateway Towards Ladakh

Sonmarg is one of the important gateways for travellers heading towards Ladakh from Kashmir.

From Sonmarg, the road continues east towards Zoji La. After crossing the mountain pass, the route continues towards the Ladakh region.

Srinagar → Sonmarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil → Ladakh
